What is a gov.uk domain?

The gov.uk domain is an exclusive TLD to UK public bodies and is owned by the CDDO (Cabinet Digital and Data Office). The gov.uk domain is managed by Nominet, the registry for .uk domains.

Who is eligible for a gov.uk domain?

Only the following organisations can apply for a .gov.uk domain name:

  • central government departments or agencies

  • non-departmental bodies - also known as an arm’s length body

  • fire services

  • county, borough, metropolitan or district councils

  • parish, town or community councils

  • neighborhood or village councils

  • combined or unitary authorities

  • police and crime commissioners

  • joint authorities

  • joint committees

  • partnership bodies

  • organisations representing a group of public sector bodies

  • organisations representing a profession across public sector bodies

For more information regarding guidance and requirements for gov.uk domains, please see the gov.uk process.

How can I get a gov.uk domain?

Unfortunately, you are not able to apply for a domain yourself and must go through a gov.uk approved registrar. Jisc is no longer the registry but is an approved registrar by CDDO to register and manage gov.uk domains.

If you would like Jisc to be your registrar, then please complete the gov.uk request form. Please note, if you are not a Jisc member, then you will need to provide your own nameservers.

Appeals

As your registrar, we will be advised of the reasons why your domain name request has been rejected. Once this information has been passed onto yourselves as the owner, you have the right to appeal against the decision if you feel that the rejection is unjustified. You will need to send your appeal to us at domains@jisc.ac.uk, with full details as to why the domain name request should be permitted. Each individual case and decision will be considered by the Naming and Approvals Committee, in which this will be final.
