eduroam is a network access solution that comprises an eduroam Wi-Fi service and an authentication system to enable you to connect your device to the eduroam Wi-Fi and access the internet - at whatever location/organisation you are at wherever the eduroam service is made available - worldwide.

The eduroam Wi-Fi service you use is operated by the local institution or organisation at which you are connecting. But the permission, i.e. authentication required to connect you to that service is always provided by your home organisation.

As a pre-requisite for connecting to an eduroam service your device needs to be correctly set up and you need to have a valid (network access) account at your home organisation. Your user credentials are unique to you and must never be divulged to anyone else. Credentials are in the form of your username i.e. userID@organisation_realm e.g. jane.smith@camford.ac.uk AND your password or a digital certificate for your devices.

Note that you may have different username/passwords to access different systems provided by your organisation and it is essential you you use the correct set of credentials for the service that they relate to.

During the connection process your identity has to be validated. In this way only known users will be connected to the eduroam service - which is one measure to ensure the security of your online interactions. The underlying technology used by eduroam ensures that the authentication of the user is always conducted by your home organisation. It is only after successful authentication that your device will be connected to the eduroam service wherever you are.
